Junior newsletter
A meeting was held at the golf club on Sunday March 25, to advertise all the plans for the juniors, and Wee Wonders, this season. This newsletter has been produced to inform others who may have been unable to attend the meeting.
New Junior Convener –
Paul Reilly has stepped forward to be our new junior convener. Having been a junior member before he knows what it takes to be part of a successful junior section and he is bringing these ideas and enthusiasm to the fore. Paul highlighted his ambition to make the Hawick junior section the best in the Scottish Borders.
New Junior committee –
Paul introduced John Scott, Kenny Forsyth, Mark Landles, Keith Morgan, and Club Captain Graham Ford who have been working behind the scenes to help plan the forthcoming changes. If you would like to be part of this planning committee, please let one of the group know. You will be made welcome.
Rules / Honesty –
Have you been up to the club yet to pick up your new Dennis The Menace rules book? The booklet is designed to simplify what can be a minefield of rules. Before and after each competition this season a member of the junior committee will be in attendance. If you are confused about a rule – why not ask? If they don’t know the answer they will find out. But juniors are also being asked to be responsible for ensuring they declare the correct score for each hole.
Wee Wonders –
Keith introduced the dates and plans for the Wee Wonders this season. The first event will be on Sunday May 13 in the form of an open day. This will include a competition and coaching opportunities. Do you have any friends you think may enjoy trying out golf? Bring them along.
New competition structure –
Throughout the close season we have been working to raise money for the junior competitions. The ladies section donated over £150, while at least 20 members have all donated £20 towards prizes. The plan is to pay out prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and scratch each week. There will be a presentation at around 5pm each Sunday. The prize winners will have their photo taken and this will be published on the golf club Facebook page and in the local press. We want to celebrate success at Hawick Golf Club. Several tees will also be changed on the course this season. The 1st tee will revert to where the tee used to be, along with the tees at the 4th, 14th and 17th. A new junior order of merit is also being introduced. Hoover up the points on offer throughout the season and check out how you fare on the leaderboard. Competitors will be able to log their scores into the computer after each tournament this season, following competition the results and handicap changes will be completed immediately.
Junior captain –
The junior captain will be voted for and announced during April. The junior captain will be someone who will represent the juniors. Watch out for more details on this.
Summer golf –
The older members of the junior section will be tasked with the responsibility of organising summer golf during, what we hope, will be long, hot, summer holidays.
Family friendly 9-hole midweek golf –
This new initiative is all about getting people out playing golf. Every Wednesday from May these midweek competitions will be on offer. Playing from the 2nd tee to the 10th. Men, women, and juniors can all play together. Remember to book your tee times, enter the competition, and enjoy 9-holes of competitive golf.
Remember the junior section is about encouraging new and existing golfers to the club. After your game visit the clubhouse for a refreshment. Encourage others to join and enjoy Hawick Golf Club.
